Virus Expert Says the End is “Not Necessarily Near” Despite the Fact That We’ve “Turned a Corner”

Cases and hospitalizations are going down despite the numbers still being jaw-droppingly high. “I do think we’ve turned the corner,” said Dr. Jha on CBS. “There’s no doubt about that. In my mind, as I look at the data, we still have a lot of Americans getting sick and dying everyday—a hundred thousand infections, 1,500 Americans dying every day. So the end is not necessarily near. It’ll get near much faster if people get vaccinated. But I think the worst is behind us. We still have some rocky days ahead, rocky days.”

Virus Expert Warned We Will See Spikes

Mandates will help temper spreads. “That’s what makes me optimistic that we still have the fall and winter to get through—and especially in the Northern half of the country, it gets colder,” said Jha. “People are spending more time indoors. So we might see little spikes, little bumps in cases. New England, which is very well vaccinated, I think is going to do okay. Midwest, Great Plains states, a lot of places with low vaccination rates. I’m more worried.”

Virus Expert Said Mask Mandates are Working

“They are working. There’s been a very noisy minority who’s protesting. But when you look at United Airlines, you look at the hospitals, 98, 99% of people are getting vaccinated. I think we’re just going to see this play out across the country,” Jha said on NBC.

Virus Expert Hopes His Young Son Can Get Vaccinated By Halloween

When can kids 5 to 11 get vaccinated? Pfizer has applied for emergency use for kids. “I have a nine-year-old and I’m hoping he’s going to get his first shot by Halloween,” Jha said on CBS. “So look, we’re going to find out in the next couple of weeks from the FDA. And my hope is with that authorization, five to 11 year old should be able to get vaccinated pretty quickly thereafter.”

Virus Expert Was Asked When we Can Stop Wearing Masks

“Places like San Francisco that have very high vaccination rates, they’re starting to already peel back some of those mask mandates,” said Jha. “Certainly by early next year, it all depends on how good a job we do on getting people vaccinated, kids vaccinated.

Virus Expert Says Be Careful Over the Holidays

On CBS, host Gayle King asked: “Do you think it’s okay for vaccinated and non-vaccinated adults to be together over the holidays?” “I hate to say this,” said Jha, “I don’t think it’s great. I’m not doing it. The issue is unvaccinated people, especially with Delta out, there are real risks. There are risks to themselves. They can cause breakthrough infections in vaccinated people. So I think people just need to get vaccinated and I think gatherings should be all vaccinated.” So get vaccinated, and to protect your life and the lives of others, don’t visit any of these 35 Places You’re Most Likely to Catch COVID.
